June 18, 2021 – Tamuning, Guam – In a major milestone in the fight against COVID-19, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) is pleased to announce that over 90% of its staff are fully vaccinated against the virus. The hospital targeted reaching this goal by the end of June, however, incredibly strong commitment and thorough education campaigns from the Infection Control and Employee Health teams at GMHA, have encouraged more staff to get vaccinated sooner.
“Reaching our 90% vaccination goal truly shows how committed our staff is to ensuring patient safety. We’re ready for all incoming emergencies, elective surgeries, out-patients and anyone else who needs our services in the community. Everyone coming through our doors can rest assured that GMHA staff remain on guard and continuing our above-standards COVID-control measures,” said Lillian Perez-Posadas, GMHA CEO.
The journey doesn’t stop here for the hospital. The GMHA team continues to encourage remaining staff, both clinical and non-clinical, to get vaccinated. At this time, vaccinations are on a voluntary basis for all GMHA staff.
“The ultimate goal is of course vaccinating 100% of eligible staff. Reaching 90% so far is an incredible accomplishment and we’re optimistic that we can get to the finish line,” said Perez-Posadas.
GMHA is also supporting the wider community efforts by vaccinating patients who agree to receive the inoculation. Hospital staff have so far administered at least a first dose of the vaccine to 219 community members.
“It has been a long battle over the past year and our staff have worked tirelessly to support the community in getting to where it is now. We’ve always had extremely high standards for COVID-precautions within our walls and knowing 90% of our staff is vaccinated, is an even greater layer of defense,” said Dr. Joleen Aguon, GMHA Associate Administrator, Clinical Services.
The team at GMHA has been on the frontlines of COVID-19 since Day One. As our Island continues to ease restrictions, GMHA, Guam’s trusted public hospital, and its entire staff will continue to serve as our community’s go-to healthcare facility.
