Joint Information Center – JIC Release No. 1041
May 3, 2022, 4:10 p.m. (ChST)
COVID-19 Test Results: 68 New Cases, Five Hospitalized;
GMH Contines Mask Mandate; Second COVID-19 Booster Doses Available
COVID-19 Test Results: 68 New Cases Reported
Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) reported 68 new cases of COVID-19 from 903 specimens analyzed on May 2, 2022. 37 of the cases reported today are through the Department of Defense. To date, there have been a total of 48,254 officially reported cases, 354 deaths, 319 cases in active isolation, and 47,581 not in active isolation.
Five Hospitalized for COVID-19
SPECIAL NOTE: Based on today's data, if we were to compare two (2) hypothetical populations of 100,000 people each, vaccinated versus unvaccinated, there would be 2 vaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19 compared to 19 unvaccinated people hospitalized for COVID-19. The risk of being hospitalized for COVID-19 is about 10 times higher for the unvaccinated as compared to the vaccinated. *Estimated population is based on DPHSS Immunization Program analysis of 2020 Census data. Updates are expected pending further Census 2020 data breakdown.
GMHA Continues Mask Mandate
Although Executive Order No. 2022-13 rescinded the mask mandate and lifted the mandatory use of masks indoors, the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) will continue enforcing its mask mandate until further notice. GMHA will evaluate this policy on a regular basis, while monitoring community spread and factoring in federal CDC recommendations. As GMHA cannot guarantee that everyone entering its facilities is COVID-negative, the hospital and SNF will continue requiring mask-wearing to protect all of the staff, patients and visitors.
Second COVID-19 Booster Doses Available
Second doses of the COVID-19 booster are available to individuals ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. Eligible individuals may choose to receive a second booster dose using an mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months after the first booster dose.
Additionally, adults between the ages of 18 and 49 who are not moderately or severely immunocompromised and who received Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine as both their primary series dose and booster dose may receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months after the Janssen booster dose. Adults ages 50 years and older could benefit from a second mRNA booster dose as they are at increased risk for severe COVID-19. Adults 50 years and older may choose to receive a second booster dose, if it has been at least 4 months after the first booster dose.
Guam COVID-19 Vaccination Update
As of May 2, 2022, a total of 136,409 of Guam’s eligible population (residents 5 years and older) is fully vaccinated.
