                                   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GDOE Partners with REL Pacific to Engage Educators in Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies to Support Elementary and Middle School Students' Success in Math

The Guam Department of Education (GDOE), in partnership with the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Pacific, is delivering a professional learning session on October 11, 2022, to October 13, 2022, for a group of 50 teachers, instructional coaches, and principals on strategies for supporting elementary and middle school students’ success in math.

This is the first in a series of six planned sessions that focus on strengthening educators’ knowledge and use of evidence-based instructional strategies that can help students develop their proficiency in math and better prepare them for advanced mathematics and other complex problem-solving tasks. The current project is being piloted with educators from elementary and middle schools that feed into Simon A. Sanchez High School and Southern High School with the goal of expanding this work to more schools and grade levels in the coming years.

The project is part of a larger GDOE initiative with REL Pacific and the Guam Partnership for Supporting Student Success in Math, a group that supports GDOE’s goal of ensuring all students are ready for college and careers.

Over the next five years, the partnership will develop and deliver training, coaching, research, and information to strengthen the GDOE curriculum and instruction to improve student math achievement across elementary, middle, and high schools.

REL Pacific is funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences and its services are provided free of charge to GDOE.
