Guam STEAM Youth Guardian Camp to Start July 31

Hagåtña, Guam - The Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration, in coordination with STARBASE Guam, presents the Guam Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) Youth Guardian Camp starting Monday, July 31 through Friday, August 4, 2023. The camp will host 2nd to 12th-grade students who will apply STEAM concepts through collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to address environmental and agricultural issues communities face. The program intends to merge 21st-century skill sets with traditional CHamoru practices to emphasize the importance of how culture influences the world around us and use this understanding to develop systems and solutions that meet an identified need. 


The STEAM Youth Guardian Camp will host students in two sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Morning Session) and 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Afternoon Session). Parents or guardians can register students on starbaseguam.org. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 25 students per each available camp. Designated grade levels and topics are as follows:


2nd-3rd Grade - Innovative Creations Inspired by Plants and Animals 4th - 5th Grade - Garden Technology to Increase Fresh Food and Medicinal Plant Access and Equity 6th-8th Grade - Solar Power Innovations that Help Citizens and Places in Need 9th - 12th Grade- Oceanographers: Using ROVs, Drones, Buoys, and CHamoru Manåmko to Help Our Ocean and Freshwater “Our administration continues to support our island’s youth both in and out of the classroom,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “Through programs like the Guam STEAM Youth Guardian  Camp, we are promoting place-based learning, ensuring our youth can think beyond their textbooks and make the connections with their lessons using their surroundings.”  “Place-based learning promotes resilient communities,” said Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio. “Not only will our youth be engaged in outdoor activities and learning, but they’ll also apply critical thinking skills and problem solving to solve issues impacting us.”
