Governor Grows Support for Bill 184

Governor Grows Support for Bill 184

PRESS RELEASE

Hagåtña, Guam - Governor Lou Leon Guerrero is growing support for her proposal to build a Guam Medical Complex in Barrigada. A series of information meetings concluded on Monday with separate sessions for village mayors and concerned residents. Last week, she met with hospital staff and members of the medical community as well as the island’s veterans.

“We are grateful to those who took the time to learn more about our vision to build not just a hospital but a Guam Medical Complex to serve our people today and beyond. So many of our residents, many from the South and veterans, used these information meetings to share their personal, and many painful experiences with accessing medical care for themselves or a sick loved one. We thank you for your bravery and support in expanding our healthcare services here at home,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “I ask our lawmakers to vote ‘yes’ to Bill 184 to allow for the purchase or lease of land for the medical complex.”

“On behalf of Governor Lou and myself, I also want to thank our island’s veteran community for their overwhelming showing and for providing passionate testimony. Our veterans have served us bravely, yet are continuously underserved. We must make this investment today for them and for future generations to come,” said Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio. “Additionally, I want to thank the residents who provided feedback on ways we can improve existing services by increasing access to public transportation and providing more telehealth options. This is valuable information that ensures we best meet the needs of the people we serve–you.”

Attendees were able to ask their questions to Governor Leon Guerrero, Lt. Governor Tenorio, and their panel, which included Guam Economic Development Authority (GEDA) Administrator Melanie Mendiola, Department of Land Management (DLM) Director Joseph Borja, and Guam Ancestral Land Commission (GALC) Director and Chamorro Land Trust Commission (CLTC) Acting Director John Burch.

Meetings were held in advance of Wednesday’s public hearing on Bill No. 184-37 (COR) scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Guam Congress Building. The proposed legislation introduced by Governor Leon Guerrero supports her vision to build a medical complex in Barrigada, which co-locates a hospital, public health center, behavioral health, veterans clinic, pharmacy, and specialty care clinics in addition to medical providers’ offices on a single site.  The information meetings are complemented by the launch of an online and written petition to Build A Medical Complex for Guam.
