“We Can Take Control of Our Destiny”Micronesia Islands Forum 2024 Concludes with Goal to Establish Secretary General

PRESS RELEASE

Hagåtña, Guam—In a letter addressed to Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, Secretary of State Antony Blinken supported Guam's consideration as an associate member of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

“I am pleased to inform you that the U.S. government has transmitted to the PIF an official communication conveying its support for consideration of Guam as an associate member, and, subject to any discussions and understandings between the United States and the PIF, for the PIF to consider approving Guam’s status as an associate member at the earliest opportunity,” stated Blinken. “The United States has decided to initiate these discussions with the PIF in light of Guam’s interest in increasing its participation in the PIF and the common challenges and interests Guam shares with the PIF member states. This decision by the United States is made with the understanding that the status of associate membership in the PIF does not require Guam to take on or exercise any rights or responsibilities inconsistent with its status as a U.S. territory, including under international law.”

As the Governor of Guam, I appreciate the favorable support of our application to be an associate member of the Pacific Islands Forum. This announcement comes at the heels of the Micronesian Islands Forum, building on the progress made during this annual meeting,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “This past week, a recurring theme resonated with each emerging issue–that we share the same struggles here in the Pacific and must work together to take action. Guam shares in the challenges of our fellow islanders, and we have so much to offer this esteemed organization. Together, we can be part of the greater effort to protect this side of the Pacific.”

Guam has already submitted its application to the PIF.

Similar to Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) are also seeking associate member status with the PIF and received similar letters from Secretary Blinken.
