On Friday, February 10, 2023, little Markes Shirai was released from the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after 275 days. The infant was born premature and weighed a mere 740 grams or 1.6 lbs. Throughout his stay, Baby Markes has been a little warrior who fought to survive every day.
Premature Infant Released After Nine Months in the NICU
Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA)’s Surgery department was recognized for its high number of certified perioperative nurses. GMHA received the 2023 CNOR® Strong award from the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), which acknowledged the hospital as a “facility that advances a culture of patient safety.” The CCI is a non-profit organization that focuses on perioperative professional certifications for operating room and recovery room nurses.
